Yes, Arts for Art is an organization that deserves all the funding it can get because of the needed and important function they serve in regards to a group of artists that might get ignored otherwise. But can I look at this from a selfish standpoint as a proud resident of Lower East Side Manhattan? This is one of the most important neighborhoods in jazz history. At some point almost everyone lived here — Bird, Mingus, etc, etc, etc. I see no other organization fostering the jazz legacy and energy of the Lower East Side like Arts for Art - with an emphasis on the energy, for we are looking ahead... This organization functions on so many levels. The music it fosters is so important on a world music stage but as far as the history of New York City this organization is vital, or maybe beyond vital.
