Music is Mine (MiM) Education Programs

Music is Mine (MiM) is Arts for Art's Music Program for young (ages 8-21) musicians and intergenerational musicians. With improvisation as the basis of our pedagogy, our teachers (FreeJazz legends) give students the capacity to create music, both collaboratively and individually, whether the student is beginner or advanced.

PROGRAM
William Parker's Intergenerational Workshop
Entering the Tone World
Saturdays at 12 pm
Jan 14 & 28
Feb 4, 11, 18 & 25
The Clemente 107 Suffolk Street, NYC
Room 309

Suggested  donation is $20/ session
Minimum enrollment  is 8 persons, Maximum enrollment 20 persons

Advanced and Intermediate-level musicians will learn ways to build a creative improvising musical vocabulary by listening and responding to different sounds using all of the technical and creative tools at their disposal.

Musicians will be encouraged to find their own unique sound thus enriching the music. The overall emphasis is on inspiration and reaching for new creative heights and in this way, they can find their way into the Tone World.

Under the musical direction of William Parker.

School Partnerships
MiM collaborates with the Institute for Collaborative Education and the Urban Assembly School of Music and Art to introduce collective music making to its students.  These opportunities teach group improvisation through careful listening, develop confidence by encouraging students to bring their own compositions for development and group performance, introducing students to rhythms, melodies, and instruments of different cultures, and much more. Our school program includes workshops that provide young musicians the opportunity to work together as a band, supporting each other creatively. These workshops and rehearsals culminate in performances.

Testimonials
"The first day I joined MiM, I was surprised that I was in a room of people who truly loved music (unlike my schoolmates). What I love most about MiM is the loving and encouraging environment that's been created to grow us as musicians and improvisers. MiM quite literally is responsible for making me a better and more comfortable soloist."
-MiM Student

“In my first MiM class I was immediately wishing I had known about the program earlier because it was super interesting. I have been learning violin through Suzuki since I was five but I had no experience with jazz or improvising to make art with sound. I learned so much and I know my music skills have expanded. I’ll keep coming back because it was so much fun.”
- MiM Student

“At the Music is Mine workshops I had the amazing opportunity to learn from musicians and peers I never would have spent time with otherwise. I was able to improve my improvising and sight reading, and made friends I probably wouldn’t have outside of the workshops. It’s a great program, and I hope to continue to be a part of it in the future!”

Drummer Michael TA Thompson, saxophonist Daro Behroozi, vocalist Raina Sokolov Gonzalez, along with leading composer and bassist, William Parker are leading and shaping the MiM Vision Ensemble.

The Ensemble began as the Visionary Youth Orchestra in 2010 to pass to budding musicians the concepts of world improvised music as they discover their unique musical voice.

Daro Behroozi has been teaching music to young people for 12 years. He began as a volunteer with the Musical Mentors program in 2009, where he taught woodwinds and creative expression to elementary school students in Harlem for 4 years. Since then, as an original member of the internationally touring brass band Lucky Chops, he has taught master classes and led clinics with young musicians across the US and Europe.

William Parker is a composer bassist/multi-instrumentalist improviser, educator, and author. He studied bass with Richard Davis, Art Davis, Milt Hinton, Wilbur Ware, Jimmy Garrison, and Paul West. He has recorded over 150 albums, had countless celebrated stage appearances, and helped shaped the jazz scene for both his peers and youths. In 2013, Parker received the Doris Duke Performing Artist Award in recognition of his influence and impact on the creative jazz scene over the last 40 years.
