From June 11-16, 2019 the Vision Festival returns to Roulette in Brooklyn. Now in its 24th year, this festival of music, dance, poetry, and visual art is heralded as “one of New York’s most essential art events” (New York Times). Legendary and emerging stars representing the free jazz, experimental, and avant-garde communities including Lifetime Achievement honoree Andrew Cyrille, Jemeel Moondoc, Kris Davis, Dianne McIntyre, and many more.

Spotlight on Jemeel Moondoc
Arriving in New York City after studying at Antioch College, Jemeel Moondoc gained popularity during the Loft Jazz Era with Ensemble Muntu, featuring bassist William Parker, pianist Mark Hennen, trumpeter Arthur Williams and later, trumpeter Roy Campbell Jr. Moondoc also formed the Jus Grew Orchestra, releasing two albums, including The Jemeel Moondoc Tentet/Jus Grew Orchestra, recorded live at Vision Festival 2003.
In the early eighties Moondoc recorded three albums for the European based Soul Note Records, including Judy’s Bounce featuring Ed Blackwell and Fred Hopkins. Recent touring ensembles include Cosmic Nickelodeon with Matthew Shipp, Nathan Breedlove, Hilliard Green, and Chad Taylor; New World Pygmies with William Parker and Hamid Drake; and with Steve Swell’s Soul Travelers. On June 12 at the Vision Festival, Moondoc will premiere a new ensemble, Alto Gladness, featuring fellow alto players Idris Ackamoor and Bobby Zankel, who all played together in Cecil Taylor's Black Music Ensemble at Antioch College. |
