Spotlight on Amina Claudine Myers
Born in Blackwell, Arkansas, Amina Claudine Myers' music career began in directing church choirs, singing, and playing gospel and rhythm and blues, and her early jazz experience came in groups lead by Gene Ammons and Sonny Stitt.
After moving to Chicago in the 1960s, Ms. Myers became a member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), began composing for voice and instruments and appearing on classic AACM records. Now based in NYC, Myers has become well known for her work involving voice choirs, voice and instrumental ensemble, musical theater, and a robust exploration of the pipe organ, all while seamlessly blending the blues, jazz, gospel and extended forms. |
