On September 6, Arts for Art and A Gathering of the Tribes have brought together a stellar group of musicians and poets to celebrate Steve Cannon.
Raised in New Orleans he came to New York to teach and write. In the late 1980s after going blind, he galvanized an artistic community on the Lower East Side. Steve was a writer, a teacher, and mentor to poets and writers of all classes. He was a supporter of artists and a lover of jazz. In the 1990s he founded, with support from his good friend David Hammons, A Gathering of the Tribes. Steve was a Lower East Side icon as well as a friend and colleague of Arts for Art. Cannon appeared at the Vision Festival starting with its inception in 1996 and also helped curate other poets to perform. The Tributes to Steve Cannon will continue during our InGardens series in September, with the exception of September 29 which will be a Birthday Tribute to Roy Campbell Jr. |
