Pianist and Free Jazz giant Dave Burrell returns to Vision Festival 22 on June 6 with his all-star quartet featuring Kidd Jordan on tenor sax, William Hooker on drums, and William Parker on bass. In 2004, Burrell brought the same ensemble with Steve Lehman and Sabir Mateen on reeds, to revisit the landmark 1969 BYG Actuel recording Echo. Dave Burrell is a true visionary, having performed alongside Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders, Sonny Sharrock, and countless otherwise; creating his own language on the piano; and recreating the tradition every time he plays.

Henry Grimes was supposed to be playing in this group too. Dave Burrell phoned us in November (2016) to invite Henry to play, and he called back a couple of days later to confirm, having received approval from Patricia Parker. We heard nothing further and assumed everything was fine, but just when we were leaving for Knoxville so Henry could play in the Big Ears Festival leading his group (Nicole Mitchell, Tomeka Reid, and Warren Smith), the Vision Festival listings came out in JazzTimes, and Henry's name was not there. So I called Patricia and said there was a mistake in JazzTimes and could she please get it corrected? She said no, she had taken Henry out because he is "diminished." This without even telling us or discussing anything with us!! Now, Henry Grimes is 81 years old and has been playing through Parkinson's Disease for about three years now, but this year it has gotten worse, and he cannot play the violin any more, and he can hardly walk, but if he can sit on a barstool instead of standing, he can still play the double-bass as great as ever, and you all know that is very great indeed. Is this any way to treat a great master musician who has deeply influenced the traditional and futuristic role of the double-bass in our music?? Last year Henry received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Vision Festival. This year he is treated like dirt. I tried to ask Henry's fellow musicians to speak up for him, but they are too scared that they will be banned from future Vision Festivals, if any. For further information, please contact me at musicmargaret@gmail.com or call 212-841-0899. Press inquiries are especially welcome. Did someone say she stands for justice and compassion?? That is blatant hypocrisy. 8/8/2017 04:26:00 am

Many would agree that this man is really s legend and a very hardworking and talented one. I have been watching his growth for so long and I am so proud that he has been achieving so much for himself. Being a pianist is not easy, but I remember one time when I was talking to a dreamer, he said that being a pianist will only be hard if you do not love what you are doing. Your melody will help you fly and your fingers will navigate your direction. words of magical depiction of music and arts from a very young dreamer. Today I believe that that young boy has a point and I know someday i will be even more proud of him. Comments are closed.
