We are living in a time when bearing witness has become one of our most powerful acts. To create space to feel, to hear, to truly listen — to understand the difference between listening and hearing — and to carry that understanding from the level of human community into the sonic space, into the creative exchange between artists. Title: Revolutionary Suicide + Ritual
Experimental movement/ritual is used to cut to the core of the absurd in attempting to be fully human in a capitalist profit-driven society. Spirituality and rebellion are emoted in cadences of Black radicalism/swag as bodies once regarded as chattel and cinematic bufooney, now evoke passionate free kinetic pleas for the annihilation of those systems fueling the absurd.

Patton’s video images emerge through modulations of a system of camera-based feedback, created by pointing an analogue video camera at the monitor receiving its signal. The feedback system recycles and amplifies its input by bearing witness to its interiority.

The difference between being heard and being deeply heard is a change of heart.
When you are deeply heard something in you shifts — you know it because everything changes. That knowing is the swing. To be attuned to the self, to the other, to the heartbeat of the earth, to the arterial rhythms of this sacred world. For Milford Graves — whose listening revealed the living intelligence within rhythm, within the body, within life itself.

Title: ‘Canal Dreams Night and Day’
‘Canal Dreams’ bears witness to the history of Canal Street by way of dreams. The video takes a journey through time, interweaving the real and the imagined. Memory, environs and people merge in an improvised whole that speaks to the present moment. This work is part of the larger project ‘Excavations of Canal Street’ that draws on the artist’s 46-year personal archive and her long-term collaboration with the downtown community.

In considering Bearing Witness, there is a commitment to staying awake in solidarity even though it can hurt; it made me think of another word- “baring” –to bare witness, which can mean to uncover and reveal the unembellished truth, expose whatever is at risk of being minimized or erased. To lay down the truth as we might bare our souls. We can consider both commitments: to bear and to bare witness.
